Costa Rica holds a special place in my heart. I've been lucky enough to visit this beautiful country multiple times, and every time, it feels like I'm discovering something new. From the vibrant jungles to the peaceful beaches, Costa Rica is a place where nature truly comes alive. I’ve hiked through misty cloud forests, soaked in natural hot springs, and connected with the warm-hearted locals. What I love most about Costa Rica is the “pura vida” lifestyle. It's about slowing down, appreciating life, and embracing the beauty around you.
Even though Costa Rica is just a small country, it is home to more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity! With a population of just 5 million, it's a place where people care about one another, making it feel like a close-knit community. The country has no army and focuses its resources on education, healthcare and nature conservation. Costa Rica is also a Blue Zone, where people live longer, healthier lives. Whether you're a nature lover, adventure seeker, or just in need of some relaxation, Costa Rica offers something for everyone. Its two coastlines, one on the Pacific Ocean and one on the Caribbean, are filled with amazing beaches, each with its own unique charm. Spanish is the main language, and the friendly locals will make you feel right at home.
I can’t wait to share my love for this amazing country with you and inspire your adventures!

Traveling around Costa Rica is an adventure in itself. There are a few ways to get around. If you’re up for some freedom and flexibility, I highly recommend renting a car. Sure, it can be a bit more pricey, but the freedom it gives you to explore those off-the-beaten-path spots is totally worth it. You’ll have the chance to see incredible sights at your own pace, and trust me, that’s something you won’t want to miss. If you're planning to visit some more remote areas, I’d suggest going for a 4x4. It's not totally necessary, but some of the roads, especially the dirt roads, might be a bit challenging for a regular car.
That said, buses are also an option. They cover most known tourist destinations and are quite cheap. But, just a heads-up, Costa Rica’s public transport system isn’t always the most reliable. The schedules can be a bit all over the place, so it might not be the best choice if you're on a tight schedule.
For something in between, you can also consider shared shuttles or private transfers. Most accommodations can help you arrange these.
So, whether you’re driving yourself or taking a shuttle or a bus, the key is to go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

When it comes to traveling in Costa Rica, it really depends on how much time you have. Personally, I love slow travel, taking my time to truly discover every corner of the country. If you want to experience all the amazing places I write about on the page below, I’d recommend taking at least a month. This way, you’ll have time to explore at your own pace. I also recommend spending multiple days in one spot, as it gives you the chance to really soak in the local culture and experience the place beyond just the tourist attractions. But, if you're short on time, no worries! You can still make the most of your trip by selecting a few destinations to get a taste of what Costa Rica has to offer.

If you're wondering when to visit Costa Rica, I’d say the best time is during the winter months (November-March). The weather is usually perfect, with lots of sunshine. But honestly, there’s no “bad time” to visit. The rainy season (April-November, with it’s peak in October) may bring a few more showers, but it’s when the country’s green color really comes to life, and there will be fewer tourists around to share it with.

Costa Ricans absolutely love their rice and beans, and honestly, they show up in almost every dish. It’s the base of pretty much everything here, simple but very tasty! One of my favorites is gallo pinto, a classic breakfast dish made with rice, beans, and a side of scrambled eggs and sour cream. Another must-try is the casado, a hearty lunch dish that includes rice, beans, a protein (like chicken or fish), salad, and fried plantains.
Speaking of plantains, don’t miss patacones, crispy fried green plantains to dip in fresh guacamole or other salsas. Chifrijo is another favorite of mine, a mix of rice, beans, fried pork, and pico de gallo. If you’re a fan of seafood, try ceviche, fresh fish marinated in citrus juice and mixed with onions and cilantro.
For a sweet treat, arroz con leche (creamy rice pudding) is a favorite dessert. And to cool off, grab a michelada, a beer or soda with lime juice, salt, and ice cubes or a pipa, a fresh coconut cut open for you on the spot.
Costa Rican food is simple but full of flavor, and these dishes are my personal favorites!
Travel route
San José
The capital of the country. This is the place where most people start their travels in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is known for its nature and not necessarily for its cities. I wouldn’t recommend spending too much time in San Jose. Stay for a night after you arrive to rest, get used to the time difference and start your roadtrip. When you head towards the Caribbean coast, the Irazú volcano, is the perfect stop on your route. With its 3400 meters in hight it is the highest volcano of Costa Rica. It is easily accessible and therefore the perfect pit stop.
Puerto Viejo
A little surfer town tucked away on the Caribbean coast. This place really has it all! Stunning nature, friendly people, trendy beach bars and lots of wildlife. A good place to get to know Costa Rica’s laid back culture.
Fill your days by discovering the beautiful coastline, learning how to surf, sipping on a fresh coconut or going kayaking through the jungles. Puerto Viejo is also a great place to spot wildlife. Make sure to visit Cahuita National Park and maybe you will even spot some sloths and monkeys!
Visit Playa Cocles in the afternoon, the beach comes alive with people playing volleyball, enjoying music and having out with friends. A great way to connect with locals and fellow travellers. What a finish to a perfect day spend in paradise.

Tortuguero
Tortuguero is a must-visit for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and those seeking a more off-the-grid experience. By boat, you will reach the remote and colorful town of Tortuguero, located just on the edge of the national park. This area is a very important site for endangered sea turtles, therefore its name (Tortuga means turtle in Spanish).
One of the most magical experiences is witnessing sea turtles nesting on the beach. Between July and October, thousands of green sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. A breathtaking sight that makes Tortuguero one of the best places in the world for turtle conservation.
Besides turtles, there are many other wild animals here. The canals of Tortuguero National Park are home to manatees, caimans, monkeys, and countless bird species. Exploring the waterways by boat or kayak offers an unforgettable way to experience the area’s beauty up close.
Aside from wildlife, the village itself has a unique charm. With no roads leading to Tortuguero, the only way to get there is by boat or a small plane, adding to its secluded and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can stroll through the colorful town and enjoy the fresh Caribbean cuisine.

Ostional
Just a 20-minute ride from Nosara, you'll find Playa Ostional. Mostly known by locals, this beach is a great spot for surfers when the conditions are right. But what makes Ostional truly special is its role in one of nature’s most incredible sights. During the rainy season, especially the week before a new moon, hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of sea turtles arrive to lay their eggs in the volcanic black sand. While turtles nest here year-round, the peak season from August to December brings massive “arribadas”, with waves of turtles coming ashore, mostly between 8 PM and 4 AM. Witnessing this event is an unforgettable experience and a must-do when visiting the area. If you’re hoping to witness this incredible sight, ask the locals, they usually know when the turtles are expected to arrive.
Within 45 to 54 days, the baby turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean. While they generally hatch at night, it’s not uncommon to witness this incredible moment during the day. Imagine sitting on the beach in the afternoon when suddenly, a tiny turtle heads start popping up, an unforgettable experience that truly showcases the wonders of nature.
The beaches around Ostional are protected. It is not allowed to build too close to the shoreline, to make bonfires or visit the beach without a guide during the arribada time. Please respect these regulations and follow the rules when visiting Ostional.

Just like Nosara, Santa Teresa is a trendy beach town on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. A lively mix of surfers, yogis, and travelers come together here, drawn by the good waves, breathtaking sunsets, and laid-back atmosphere. Surfing is a big part of life in Santa Teresa. With its powerful and consistent waves, it’s a go-to spot for experienced surfers. But if you’re just starting out, no worries! Playa Hermosa, just a short ride away, offers smaller waves that are perfect for beginners. .
But Santa Teresa is more than just a surf town. Rent an ATV and explore the jungle roads, take a yoga class with ocean views, or visit the waterfalls of Montezuma.

Manuel Antonio is the smallest national park in Costa Rica yet also the most popular one. This means it can get a bit crowded, especially during peak hours. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider exploring one of Costa Rica’s less-visited parks, like Corcovado or Tortuguero.

When driving from Monteverde towards Manuel Antonio you will pass the Crocodile bridge. This is a great place for a small pitstop. Park your car just before the bridge and walk over it. You will see a bunch of enormous crocodiles lying in the water just under the bridge. A unique sight.

Uvita
Head down the coast to the relaxed beach town of Uvita. This spot is known for its lovely beaches, lush jungle, waterfalls and the unique Marino Ballena National Park. Here, at low tide, the ocean reveals a sandbar shaped like a whale’s tail. Very fitting, as this is one of the best places in Costa Rica to spot humpback whales! Every year, these special animals migrate here, making it a must-visit for wildlife lovers. The best time for whale watching is from July to October and again from December to March, when the whales come to the warm waters to breed and raise their young.

Drake Bay is a true hidden gem on Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. A remote paradise where the jungle meets the ocean, and nature takes lead. The best way to reach this secluded spot is by boat from Sierpe, cruising through the mangroves before arriving at the bay’s coastline. It’s an adventure in itself!
Drake Bay is the gateway to Corcovado National Park, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.
